The Poor: our Masters

"The poor are our teachers. This is a phrase I’ve heard a lot in my time with Heart’s Home and it is some­thing that I still find myself encoun­tering on a reg­ular basis. While I was on mis­sion in Peru, the poor taught me how to love others, how to love myself, how to open my heart to God, and many other things.

Since I’ve been back, the poor have con­tinued to teach me in much the same way. Most Saturday morn­ings, I vol­un­teer with one of the home­less shel­ters in Oklahoma City and take break­fast to those living on the street and those who cannot always afford a warm break­fast. It has truly become one of my favorite things and is some­thing I look for­ward to every week. I have enjoyed get­ting to know the other vol­un­teers, those who are staying in the shelter, and our friends on the street.
