"The poor are our teachers. This is a phrase I’ve heard a lot in my time with Heart’s Home and it is something that I still find myself encountering on a regular basis. While I was on mission in Peru, the poor taught me how to love others, how to love myself, how to open my heart to God, and many other things.
Since I’ve been back, the poor have continued to teach me in much the same way. Most Saturday mornings, I volunteer with one of the homeless shelters in Oklahoma City and take breakfast to those living on the street and those who cannot always afford a warm breakfast. It has truly become one of my favorite things and is something I look forward to every week. I have enjoyed getting to know the other volunteers, those who are staying in the shelter, and our friends on the street.
