by sister Regine F., Servant of God’s Presence
Katie Kustusch who is a postulant with the Servants of God’s Presence has spent the last two months taking care of her mother Kathleen (also known as Kappy) who went back to the Father’s house on Holy Thursday. I was blessed to share with her family the time of wake and burial; the many faces I encountered during these three days told me how this woman was deeply loved and had an impact on many lives. Several people told me how she was constantly challenging people to go further and to give the best of themselves. Christ was at the center of her life, He was her best friend. Despite the sorrow, hearts were filled with a deep joy and an real thanksgiving for her life.
Our dear friend Miguel Colon drew his last breath in Carmen’s arms, his loving wife who had been tirelessly and tenderly caring for him all through these last months. Miguel had the simplicity of a child and an immense heart. For the past three years he had been faithfully visiting with us in the nursing home and he taught us so much in his way of being present to the sick; his desire was to bring them joy and to see them smile. While he was himself hospitalized, he was deeply moved whenever he heard the cry of many other patients nearby. He told us how much he would have loved to be able to go and just sit by their side and console them, because they were utterly alone. He was constantly offering up his own sufferings for those who were suffering too. He would often tell us; “I know God is Love but I would like to know what it really means and I would like to enter into that Love.”
Thank you Kappy and Miguel for all you taught us! Until we meet again, we keep you and your loved ones in our prayers.
