Here are the thoughts of Noemie’s father about her mission commitment with Heart’s Home. Noemie was sent as a Heart’s Home missionary in Thailand. She left just after finishing her studies and stayed there from November 2007 until June 2009.
Noemie had been wanting to engage in some sort of humanitarian project practically since she was just out of high school. She wanted to take a year off from school between her junior and senior year of college, however we felt that she needed to finish school first. Had we known then what we know now we would have been far more insistent, though in the end no credible projects surfaced and she finished school normally.
Noemie selected Heart’s Home herself after doing her own research. When she presented her project to us I was impressed from the beginning, though my wife was not. The organization appeared (and proved to be) well structured and above all anchored in the Lord. I liked that Noemie had to raise her own sponsors and that she was accountable to them during her mission. It was clear to me that God was guiding Noemie toward this mission.
The mission itself was EXTREMELY well-structured and supervised. That being said however, the conditions the volunteers (who are only girls in Thailand) dealt with were difficult, requiring maturity, humility, and perseverance. Had she undertaken this mission two years earlier, I am not certain that she would have been as well-equipped. We never feared for her safety nor her health and we were able to communicate regularly with her. At the end of her mission she was given time to welcome us into her new world and that was well worth the trip - I highly recommend it to all parents. Through her sponsor letters and our trip to visit her, both my wife and I became very supportive - and proud - of her having undertook such a demanding mission.
Noemie lived an intense 20 month mission which changed her. As she looks to the future and ponders her path forward, I am glad she does not have to return to school and finish her degree. She has gained confidence in herself and insight into the world beyond her years. Her Heart’s Home experience was very positive and will be with her for the rest of her life.
