Learning to See Daily Miracles

by Anna O., on mission in Peru

I want to share with you specifically the miracle of our dear friend, Daniel, a 13 year old boy in our neighborhood. Daniel comes from a dysfunctional family of 6, suffering from abusive relationships and alcoholism. His mother struggles to keep track of dates and understand instructions, and lives submitting to the power of her husband. They live in a pretty shambly house with their many dogs, chickens, and cats. Daniel himself has many behavioral and psychological issues. However, he lights up when we start to do this snapping dance that I taught him, or when him and his younger brother run into our house. Because of his complicated situation, we managed to move Daniel into a home for boys in the center of Lima where he can go to school and be formed in a healthier environment. One weekend, Daniel came to our house to work on his homework with our help. He showed up as we were finishing breakfast, we gave him some bread and fruit. As I was in the office, next to the kitchen taking care of some things, I heard Daniel begin to pray… “Dear God, thank you for this food and for my family and for Puntos Corazón.” I peeked in and saw Daniel standing by himself, blessing his food before eating. It was such a small, simple moment, but it made me pause. Here was this little boy, who normally tries to escape from school and disregard his parents, standing at our table and praying out of his own accord. Just another simple daily miracle.
