Hungry Hearts await Him

by Mara W., on mission in Ecuador

On Sundays we take Holy Communion to the sick and homebound. This is a beautiful part of our week; we get to take Jesus to the homes of the people who await him with hungry hearts. It’s humbling to witness their gratefulness for having received Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, and a weekly reminder that I am just an instrument of His presence. Recently we started taking Communion to Señora Pilar, who is actually the great-grandma of several of the kids who come to our house. She is elderly and has many health problems that keep her from leaving her house. She is a woman of incredible faith. Every time I go to see her I leave with a desire to love God with the same conviction and faith that she does. The first time we came to her house with Holy Communion, she told us how sad it makes her to not be able to go to Mass every week and that she’d been praying for a long time to be able to receive the Blessed Sacrament. “I knew God would answer my prayers. He always hears us, but he does things in His own time,” she told us. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart. To receive the Body of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament is the greatest gift we are given in this life. God has answered my prayers by bringing you to my house so that I can receive my Lord.”
