First Young Women’s Evening

by Erica Tighe

Last week we held a young women’s night in our home in Brooklyn. All of the beautiful women gathered for evening prayer and then a dinner to mingle and introduce ourselves to one another.
Then we discussed a section of Blessed John Paul II’s encyclical on the vocation and dignity of women, Mulieres Dignitatem. We spoke about the idea that finding oneself is only possible through a sincere gift of self. We discussed ways to bring sensitivity to our world of science and technology that has lost it for what is essentially human— in our group of friends, family, and workplaces. Each one brought her own experiences and struggles of daily life and we all came together to unite in a sisterhood on the on the journey as women of God.
Lastly, we did a simple craft to represent our need of beauty and woman’s role in offering it to the world in feminine simplicity. It was such a grace-filled time of friendship, prayer, and communion—three things we found essential to follow this mission that JPII delivers to all women.
