Brooklyn: An Evening in El Salvador!

As Lent began in the chilly days of March, we decided to take a journey to more tropical climates with our friends here in Brooklyn to “visit” the Heart’s Home in El Salvador. With the help of Sr Katie and Fr Paul, we discovered the beauty of this amazing country and its people. We also enjoyed the delicious Salvadoran dish of frijoles y arros.

Fr Paul introduced us through his pictures to the coffee harvest at the Heart’s Home sisters’ home in San Pedro Perulapan. It’s an activity that brings the whole family together – old and young – in helping out the sisters at harvest time. Aptly named “Paraiso”, this part of the country is stunningly beautiful!

Sr Katie brought us into the streets of San Salvador, where the Heart’s Home volunteers live with their friends in Colonia Iberia. We discovered the beauty of the Salvadoran people, who despite often overwhelming suffering, continue to live with hope and joy.

A simple evening, we were grateful to have many friends join us, especially some kids with lots of great questions! It was a reminder for everyone present, as we wait for Easter, to look for light even in the darkest places.
